Russia vs Georgia

"The entire world, except for Americans, knows that the outbreak of armed conflict between Russian and Georgian forces in South Ossetia was entirely due to the United States and its Georgia puppet, Saakashvili."

"Americans, alone in the world, are unaware that the hostilities were initiated by Saakashvili, because Bush, Cheney and the Israeli-occupied American media have again lied to them. Everyone else in the world knows that the unstable and corrupt Saakashvili, who proclaims democracy and runs a police state, would not have taken on Russia by attacking South Ossetia unless given the go-ahead by Washington."

The above is part of an article by Paul Craig Roberts

12 YEAR OLD GIRL:

...Before I say anything else, I just want to say that I was running from Georgian troops bombing our city, not Russian troops.  I just want to say 'thank you' to the Russian troops that were out there.
SS

Where is your family now and how are they?
12 YEAR OLD GIRL:

Um, some of them are cousins, aunts and uncles in North Ossetia right now, and they're safe.  My grandma and some of my aunts and uncles are still back there, and we don't have any contact with them.  We don't know if they're alive, or anything.
SS
I know your aunt is with you.  I cannot even imagine being a 12 year old, to go through all this.   It must have been horrifying.
AUNT:
...I want you to know whom to blame... 2000 people were killed in one day...

My house was burned and 2000 and Ossetians were killed.  We can blame only one person, and the Georgian government and not blame soviet people...

Georgian war leaves 1492 Ossetians dead - local authorities

Russia Today

Wednesday, Aug 20, 2008

The total number of causalities of the Georgian – South Ossetian conflict has been revealed. According to local authorities the conflict has taken the lives of 1492 Ossetians. More than 5,000 people from South Ossetia are still in refugee camps in the south of Russia.

Approximarely 30,000 people fled from Georgia’s offensive on August 8. Many have been staying with relatives or have been taken in by ordinary charitable people. RT met a young family of refugees who are now trying to piece their shattered lives together.

Refugees rely on the kindness of strangers

Whoever’s won this war, the Ossetian people have lost the most. Two of them, Ruslan and Khatuna Khelekhsaeva, say everyting they owned in Tskhinvali now lies in ruins.

They are very clear as to who they blame for having destroyed their lives.

“We blame Georgia and America for the war. It’s the second time they’ve bombed us. We can’t bear it anymore. No one can guarantee that Georgia won’t bomb us again,” Ruslan said.

We asked Ruslan whether South Ossetia should indeed break away from Georgia.

“Independence would be good in theory but we cannot defend ourselves against Georgia. So we need to be part of Russia. If Russia didn’t support us, then there would probably be no ‘us’ left on this earth,” he added.

Khatuna’s eyes cannot hide her pain. She recounts her experience:

“After all we’ve gone through, I don’t want to go back to Tskhinvali. Words cannot describe the five days we spent hiding in our basement, scared for our lives. I am haunted by those memories.”

They arrived in North Ossetia to find the refugee camp overflowing. They were taken in by Natalya Gabarayeva, a local woman.

“I’m doing my best to take care of them. I feel so sorry for them. They arrived here with nothing, and needed a roof over their heads,” Gabaraeva said.

She added that although local authorities are doing what they can, it is still not enough for the number of people that fled South Ossetia.

Moscow accuses Israel of arming Georgia - day before Assad arrives for big arms purchases
  DEBKAfile

Wednesday, Aug 20, 2008

The timing was precise. Tuesday, Aug. 19, the Russian Deputy Chief of General Staff Col.-Gen. Anatoly Nagovitsyn accused Israel at a Moscow news conference of arming and training the Georgian military.

Wednesday, Syrian president Bashar Assad arrives in the Russian capital for a two-day visit during which the Kremlin fully expects him to exploit the storm clouds blowing in from Georgia over Russian relations with the West to press for sophisticated weapons systems not so far released by Moscow.

On Aug. 17, DEBKAfile military sources reported Moscow’s planned retaliation for America’s missile interceptors in Poland and US-Israeli military aid to Georgia may come in the form of Iskandar surface missiles installed in Syria and its Baltic enclave of Kaliningrad.

Russian Baltic and Middle East warships, submarines and long-range bombers may be armed with nuclear warheads.

One plan on the table in Moscow to punish Israel, DEBKAfile’s sources report, is the establishment of big Russian military, naval and air bases in Syria and the release of advanced weapons systems withheld until now from Iran (the S-300 air-missile defense system) and Syria (the nuclear-capable 200 km-range Iskandar surface missile).

T prepare the ground, Gen. Nagovitsyn charged Israel with arming the Georgian military with mines, explosive charges, special explosives for clearing minefields and “eight kinds of unmanned aerial vehicles.”

He added: “In 2007, Israeli experts trained Georgian commandos in Georgia and planned to supply Tbilisi heavy weaponry, electronic weapons, tanks and other arms at a later date, but the deal didn’t work out,” he said without explaining why.

Nagovitsyn also said that Russian soldiers had detained 20 mercenaries near the Georgian city of Poti, including three Arabs, all wearing Georgian army uniforms.

August 27, 2008 on the Alex Jones Radio Show, Paul Craig Roberts said:
We are being led, rather rapidly, into a nuclear confrontation with Russia, for no reason, no purpose, than an insane policy of the neocons for American Hegenomy...

[...]

...the United States that doesn't have the military or the financial power to impose itself on the world.  We have to understand Russia is a big place, and it's heavily armed, and that China is another big place, and they're our bankers.  We're totally dependent on Chinese financing for our consumption, and the daily operations of the Federal Government in Washington.

[...]

I would give it [nuclear war] almost a total certainty, and if John McCain gets in office... The neoconservatives, everyone should know by now, are insane...

[...]

Cheney and the neocons and Israel are still trying to promote a war with Iran, but now I think they are much more interested in a war with Russia, because the Russians have rejected the attempt of the Americans and the Israelis to exercise Hegenomy over them in Georgia... They have made it quite clear that they rejected this.. They will now take the efforts that were defeated in Georgia to the Ukraine and try to turn them into an American puppet state... put missile bases on Russia's border.  And the Russians are probably not going to put up with that either.  What we have is... American policy towards Russia which has thousands of nuclear weapons... going to provoke a nuclear confrontation with Russia, and there is no reason for it, it's pointless...

[...]

Russia and China will be allies... What will Japan do?...

[...]

...the end of life on earth.  This is a more serious situation than we ever faced... because there was mutually assured destruction, and neither side had a world dominant claim.  They were sitting there with checks on one another.  What we have now is the U.S. with a world dominant claim, and a war doctrine that supports that claim...  They have broken the agreement Reagan had with Gorbachov, building anti-missle... systems.  Installing these on Russia's borders, in an effort to negate the Soviet nuclear deterrant so that we can bully them.  And Russia will not stand still for this.

[...]

They actually thought Russia would simply let this happen [in Georgia] and they didn't.  And what was the American response?  They very quickly gave more money to the Polish morons, and got the agreement that the Poles wouldn't give them, and put missile bases in Poland...

[...]

...so, it means war.  Very quickly into a nuclear war... What is the United States Government doing in Georgia?

August 15, 2008       Global Research       Alex Jones Show      Interview

Attack on South Ossetia was intended to kill civilians.  It was clearly laid out that way.  It was a provocation.  If they had wanted to go in and take hold of the province they would have special forces taking over buildings, government departments, and communication networks.  They were not interested in that.  They were there to kill people.  They triggered a Russian response which caused 150 dead in Georgia from Russian bombardment of military sites.  BBC reported an excess of 1400 deaths in South Ossetia.  CNN used footage of Georgian attacks, saying these were Russians.

[...]

There was a statement from the Georgian Peace Committee.  They condemned the [Georgian] President.  This does not have the support of the Georgian population.  He [the Georgian President] did it in the name of the people, and they are saying, "No."

[...]

NATO-U.S. doctrine:

"Nuclear warfare might soon become possible in an increasingly brutal world...  The first use of nuclear weapons as a means to prevent other countries from using their nuclear weapons."

"...resort to preemptive nuclear attack to try to halt the imminent threat of nuclear weapons."

"...nuclear first strike indispensible since there is no prospect of a nuclear free world."

Editorial note: I realize the above is insane, so you might think it's not typed properly.

The Russians have always meant what they said, throughout their history.  They are very serious people in this game.  They are not bluffing when they say, "if you arm yourself with missile defense systems, you are going to have nukes aimed at you."  This is not bluster like it was during the cold war.

Brzezinski's Georgia Puppets
Attack Russia - WWIII In Sight

By Webster G. Tarpley
August 11, 2008

WASHINGTON, DC -- Clearly playing the role of the aggressor, the NATO puppet regime of Mikhail Saakashvili has carried out a midnight sneak attack against Russian peacekeepers in the province of South Ossetia. Those peacekeepers have been there for 15 years under an agreement with Georgia. Saakashvili is a protégé and creature of Zbigniew Brzezinski, the foreign policy boss of the Barack Obama presidential campaign. As is explained in my book Obama- The Postmodern Coup: The Making of a Manchurian Candidate, Saakashvili was brought to power in 2003-2004 by a people power coup or CIA color revolution, directed by the Brzezinski clan and financed by George Soros, one of Obama's key financial backers. In a very real sense, it is the Obama campaign which has attacked Russia in South Ossetia.

Responding to this provocation, Russia has struck back powerfully, hurling the Georgian military into full retreat. The 3000% increase in Georgian military spending on US military hardware since 2004 has not had the desired effect. But the Georgians have killed a score of Russian troops and shot down several aircraft. Russia is blockading the Georgian Black Sea coast and has already sunk a Georgian warship. The US regime, the butchers of Iraq, are now whining that the Russian response is "disproportionate," and that regime change is inadmissible! McCain responded by aggressive posturing against Russia scripted by Ian Brzezinski, as expected. At the Olympics, Bush had a heated exchange with Russian Prime Minister Putin over the Georgian aggression. Bush has dropped his plans to attack Iran and North Korea, and is now slavishly following Brzezinski's orders by concentrating on provoking Russian and China.

Most interesting is the response of Brzezinski's other puppet, Obama. The Messiah first intoned that it was necessary to show restraint, and stop the armed conflict. He talked then to NSC Director Hadley, Saakashvili, Rice, and unspecified foreign policy advisers undoubtedly the Brzezinskis, Zbig and Mark. Notice Obama's failure to talk with a single Russian leader he failed to bring anybody together this time. Then Obama switched to a full warmonger line, identical to that of Bush: Obama now lied that Russia had invaded Georgian sovereignty and encroached on Russian sovereignty. Obama's spokesman, Ben Rhodes, added that Russia was responsible for the conflict. This goes to show that Obama is a ticket to World War III on the Brzezinski Plan, the crackpot design to break up Russia and China, securing another century for the Anglo-American world empire. Because Brzezinski's strategic insanity unfolds on a scale more vast than that of the neocons, Obama is indeed a far bigger warmonger than Bush.

"In his later statement, Mr. Obama said, "What is clear is that Russia has invaded Georgia's sovereign - has encroached on Georgia's sovereignty, and it is very important for us to resolve this issue as quickly as possible,"' The New York Times reported. Obama is morally insane, since Georgia is the aggressor and Russia is acting in self-defense. Russian peacekeepers have been stationed in South Ossetia for about 15 years under a Russian- Georgian bilateral agreement which the provocateur Saakashvili has now chosen to violate. The pseudo-democratic Saakashvili has declared martial law and is proceeding to liquidate his internal opposition a favorite Saakashvili trick. In November 2007, when opposition to the NATO "free market" kleptocrats was getting out of hand after a large demonstration, Saakashvili also declared martial law, suppressing the media and rounding up his opponents. This is the man Obama is supporting.

WARMONGER OBAMA BLAMES RUSSIA, MIMICS BUSH, CHENEY

"Clearly over the course of the last 24 hours this crisis has escalated," said Ben Rhodes, an Obama foreign policy aide. "Clearly Russia bears the responsibility for that escalation." If this is the 3 AM phone call, Obama has failed miserably. Obama is running for the third term of the dotard warmonger Dick Cheney, who according to AP 'told Georgia's pro-American president that "Russian aggression must not go unanswered, and that its continuation would have serious consequences for its relations with the United States."'

Predictably, the US controlled corporate media, NPR, PBS, the BBC, and the rest of the Anglo-American media cartel are attempting to cover up the salient fact that this war was started by Georgia. Georgia is unquestionably the aggressor, and a cowardly one at that. It is time to demand that not one soldier, not one penny, not one ship, not one plane be used by the US to support Saakashvili and his gang of kleptocrats and thugs. There must be no NATO membership for Georgia, nor for the similar gang of kleptocrats and thugs ensconced in Kiev, Ukraine, who have declared their full support for Georgia. Russian President Medvedev has pointed out that the Georgians have already killed about 2,000 Ossetians out of a total population of 70,000, and that Georgia is pursuing genocide and ethnic cleansing. These charges are well founded. In the face of imminent military defeat, Saakashvili will have a hard time holding onto power. Russia is unlikely to consider Georgia proper a privileged sanctuary for launching further attacks, and the Tiflis airport and other assets have already been bombed by Russia. Georgia's entire military infrastructure will now be subject to destruction. This lesson will hopefully not be lost on Brzezinski's Ukrainian puppets.

South Ossetia can be compared to West Virginia. When Virginia seceded from the Union in 1861, West Virginia soon retaliated by seceding from Virginia. Similarly, when Georgia left the USSR in 1991, South Ossetia chose to remain with North Ossetia, which has been a part of Russia since about 1761. A second West Virginia exists in the form of Abkhazia, another province assigned by Stalin to the Georgian SSR which chose to stay de facto with the Russian Federation. Abkhazia fears a Georgian attack, and has declared a state of emergency, mobilizing its armed forces. Do not be surprised if Abkhazia pre-emptively seizes back some of its territory now held by Georgia.

The attack is coherent with Brzezinski's desperate plan to save the collapsing US-UK regime of world domination by finding ways to smash Russia and China, the two serious power centers capable of checkmating Washington and London. As predicted, the epicenter of world confrontation is shifting rapidly away from the Persian Gulf. The method is classic Brzezinski: Zbig, working through the Principals' Committee (Gates, Rice, Paulson, Mullen, Hadley) which rules Washington behind the scenes while the lame ducks Bush and Cheney babble off into the sunset, is playing his Georgia puppet state against Russia, leading in all probability to regime change and possible guerrilla warfare in Georgia. This is exactly what Brzezinski did with Afghanistan in 1979, leading to the collapse of the Soviet Union. It is also what Brzezinski intends to do with Iran. The Georgia-Ossetia war is already the biggest international crisis since 2003, with implications that go far beyond anything involving Iraq or Iran, since we are here dealing with the specter of superpower thermonuclear confrontation a danger which is not immediately present in the Gulf.

The Georgia-Ossetia war risks going out of control, and moving the planet towards World War III, in several ways:

There are 2,000 Georgian soldiers serving for the US in Iraq. These forces have now been called home. The US is flying them back to Georgia in US military aircraft, a very unfriendly act towards Russia, since these troops will soon be fighting the Russians under present circumstances. What is Russia decided to shoot down these US planes? That would bring World War III much too close for comfort. NBS News reports that the State Department is talking to the Russian Foreign Ministry to avoid just such a highly dangerous mid-air confrontation. American national interest demands that these Georgians be told to get home on their own power, without the US Air Force.

The Russian navy is now blockading the Black Sea coast of Georgia. What if the US or other NATO states now decide to send ships carrying humanitarian or military aid to Georgia? A large NATO fleet buildup in the eastern Mediterranean is reported. What if the US, the British, or the French try to break through the Russian naval blockade? If shooting starts, World War III could loom very quickly.

The NATO puppet regime in Ukraine controls the bases for the Russian Black Sea fleet. These NATO provocateurs in Kiev are now saying that, since the Russian Black Sea fleet has left those ports to blockade Georgia, they will not be allowed to re-enter their Ukrainian home ports. If shooting starts, this could be a wider war. If the NATO Tusk regime in Poland, yet another gaggle of Brzezinski puppets, decides to come in on the side of the Ukrainians, then Warsaw could invoke the NATO alliance, and the US could soon be at war with Russia.

Ukraine could also decide to support Georgia with ground troops. If the Ukrainians get into trouble, they will call on the Poles, and the Poles will call on NATO, also threatening to drag the US into a real war of catastrophic proportions.

Letting Poland join NATO was supreme folly. We are fortunate that Georgia and Ukraine are not NATO members already. American national interest demands good relations with Russia. The United States must not be carried towards World War III as the tail of the Brzezinski- Obama kite. There must be no support for Saakashvili and his gang.

The puppet masters behind Georgia President Saakashvili

William Engdahl
Online Journal
Friday, Aug 29, 2008

The controversy over the Georgian surprise military attacks on South Ossetia and Abkhazia on 8.8.08 makes a closer look at the controversial Georgian President and his puppet masters important. An examination shows 41-year-old Mikheil Saakashvili to be a ruthless and corrupt totalitarian who is tied to not only the US NATO establishment, but also to the Israeli military and intelligence establishment.

The famous ‘Rose Revolution of November 2003 that forced the ageing Edouard Shevardnadze from power and swept the then 36-year-old US university graduate into power was run and financed by the US State Department, the Soros Foundations, and agencies tied to the Pentagon and US intelligence community.

Mikheil Saakashvili was deliberately placed in power in one of the most sophisticated US regime change operations, using ostensibly private NGOs (non-governmental organizations) to create an atmosphere of popular protest against the existing regime of former Soviet Foreign Minister Edouard Shevardnadze, who was no longer useful to Washington when he began to make a deal with Moscow over energy pipelines and privatizations.

Saakashvili was brought to power in a US-engineered coup run on the ground by US-funded NGOs, in an application of a new method of US destabilization of regimes it considered hostile to its foreign policy agenda. The November 24, 2003, Wall Street Journal explicitly credited the toppling of Shevardnadze’s regime to the operations of “a raft of non-governmental organizations . . . supported by American and other Western foundations.” These NGOs, said the Journal, had “spawned a class of young, English-speaking intellectuals hungry for pro-Western reforms” who were instrumental laying the groundwork for a bloodless coup.

Coup by NGO
But there is more. The NGOs were coordinated by the US Ambassador to Georgia, Richard Miles, who had just arrived in Tbilisi fresh from success in orchestrating the CIA-backed toppling of Slobodan Milosevic in Belgrade, using the same NGOs. Miles, who is believed to be an undercover intelligence specialist, supervised the Saakashvili coup.

It involved US billionaire George Soros’ Open Society Georgia Foundation. It involved the Washington-based Freedom House whose chairman was former CIA chief James Woolsey. It involved generous financing from the US Congress-financed National Endowment for Democracy, an agency created by Ronald Reagan in the 1980s to “do privately what the CIA used to do,” namely coups against regimes the US government finds unfriendly.

George Soros’ foundations have been forced to leave numerous eastern European countries, including Russia, as well as China after the 1989 student Tiananmen Square uprising. Soros is also the financier together with the US State Department of Human Rights Watch, a US-based and run propaganda arm of the entire NGO apparatus of regime coups such as Georgia and Ukraine’s 2004 Orange Revolution. Some analysts believe Soros is a high-level operative of the US State Department or intelligence services using his private foundations as cover.

The US State Department funded the Georgia Liberty Institute headed by Saakashvili, the US approved candidate to succeed the no-longer cooperative Shevardnadze. The Liberty Institute in turn created “Kmara!” which translates to “Enough!” According to a BBC report at the time, Kmara! was organized in the spring of 2003, when Saakashvili along with hand-picked Georgia student activists were paid by the Soros Foundation to go to Belgrade to learn from the US-financed Otpor activists that toppled Milosevic. They were trained in Gene Sharp’s “non-violence as a method of warfare” by the Belgrade Center for Nonviolent Resistance.

Saakashvili as mafioso president

Once he was in place in January 2004 as Georgia’s new president, Saakashvili proceeded to pack the regime with his cronies and kinsmen. The death of Zurab Zhvania, his prime minister, in February 2005 remains a mystery. The official version — poisoning by a faulty gas heater — was adopted by American FBI investigators within two weeks of the Zhvania’s death. That has never seemed credible to those familiar with Georgia’s gangland slayings, crime, and other manifestations of social decay. Zhvania’s death was followed closely by a functionary of the premier’s apparat, Georgi Khelashvili, who allegedly shot himself the day after his chief’s demise. The head of Zhvania’s research staff was later found dead as well.

Figures allied with Saakashvili reportedly had a hand in the premier’s death. Russian journalist Marina Perevozkina quoted Gia Khurashvili, a Georgian economist. Prior to the fatal incident, Mr. Khurashvili had published an article in Resonans newspaper opposing the privatization and sale of Georgia’s main gas pipeline. Ten days before the prime minister’s body was found, Khurashvili was attacked and his editor-in-chief — citing pressure from ‘security service’ figures he refused to name — issued him a warning.

The late premier’s position on the pipeline issue was believed the direct reason for the murder of Zhvania. Zhvania’s brother, Georgi, also told Perevozkina that not long before Zhvania’s death he received a warning that someone was preparing to kill his brother. Saakashvili was reportedly livid when the US State Department invited Zhvania to Washington to win a Freedom Medal from the US Government’s National Democratic Institute. Saakashvili tolerates no rivals for power it seems.

Saakashvili, who cleverly marketed himself as “anti-corruption,” appointed several of his family members to lucrative posts in government, giving one of his brothers a position as chief adviser on domestic issues to the Baku-Ceyhan Pipeline project, backed by British Petroleum and other oil multinationals.

Since coming to power in 2004 with US aid, Saakashvili has led a policy of large-scale arrests, imprisonment, torture and deepened corruption. Saakashvili has presided over the creation of a de facto one-party state, with a dummy opposition occupying a tiny portion of seats in the parliament, and this public servant is building a Ceaucescu-style palace for himself on the outskirts of Tbilisi. According to the magazine, Civil Georgia (Mar. 22, 2004), until 2005, the salaries of Saakashvili and many of his ministers were reportedly paid by the NGO network of New York-based currency speculator Soros — along with the United Nations Development Program.

Israeli and US military train Georgian military

The current military assault on South Ossetia and Abkhazia, in violation of Saakashvili’s pledge to seek a diplomatic not military solution to the territorial disputes, is backed by US and Israeli military “advisers.” Israel’s Haaretz newspaper reported that on August 10 Georgian Minister of Reintegration Temur Yakobshvili “praised the Israel Defense Forces for its role in training Georgian troops and said Israel should be proud of its military might, in an interview with Army Radio. ‘Israel should be proud of its military which trained Georgian soldiers,’ Yakobashvili told Army Radio in Hebrew, referring to a private Israeli group Georgia had hired.’”

One of the targets of Russian bombs near Tbilisi was, according to IsraelNN.com, “a Georgian military plant in which Israeli experts are upgrading jet fighters for the Georgian military . . . Russian fighter jets bombed runways inside the plant, located near Tbilisi, where Israeli security firm Elbit is in charge of upgrading Georgian SU-25 jets.”

Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni, also a candidate to succeed ousted Israeli Prime Minister Olmert, proclaimed on August 10 that “Israel recognizes Georgia’s territorial integrity,” code for saying it backs Georgia’s attempt to take South Ossetia and Abkhazia.

The reported 1,000 Israeli military advisers in Georgia were not alone. On July 15, Reuters news wire carried the following report: “VAZIANI, Georgia — One thousand U.S. troops began a military training exercise called ‘Immediate Response 2008,’ in Georgia on Tuesday against a backdrop of growing friction between Georgia and neighboring Russia. The two-week exercise was taking place at the Vaziani military base near the capital, Tbilisi, which was a Russian air force base until Russian forces withdrew at the start of this decade under a European arms reduction agreement . . . Georgia has a 2,000-strong contingent supporting the U.S.-led coalition in Iraq, and Washington provides training and equipment to the Georgian military. The United States is an ally of Georgia and has irritated Russia by backing Tbilisi’s bid to join the NATO military alliance . . . ‘The main purpose of these exercises is to increase the cooperation and partnership between U.S. and Georgian forces,’ Brig. Gen. William B. Garrett, commander of the U.S. military’s Southern European Task Force, told reporters.”

With Russia openly backing and training the indigenous military in South Ossetia and Abkhazia to maintain Russian presence in the region, especially since the US-backed pro-NATO Saakashvili regime took power in 2004, the Caucasus is rapidly coming to resemble Spain in the Civil War from 1936-1939, where the Soviet Union, Nazi Germany and others poured money and weapons and volunteers into Spain in a devastating war that was a precursor to the Second World War.

In a curious footnote to the actual launch of military fighting on the opening day of the Olympics when Putin, George W. Bush and many world leaders were far away in Beijing, is a report in IsraelNN.com by Gl Ronen, stating that “The Georgian move against South Ossetia was motivated by political considerations having to do with Israel and Iran, according to Nfc. Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili decided to assert control over the breakaway region in order to force Israel to reconsider its decision to cut back its support for Georgia’s military.”

Ronen added, “Russian and Georgian media reported several days ago that Israel decided to stop its support for Georgia after Moscow made it clear to Jerusalem and Washington that Russia would respond to continued aid for Georgia by selling advanced anti-aircraft systems to Syria and Iran.” Israel plans to get oil and gas from the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline from the Caspian.

Although as of this writing Russian President Medvedev has announced Russia is halting its military response against Georgian targets, the situation is anything but stable. The insistence of Washington in bringing Georgia into its geopolitical sphere and backing an unstable regime around Mikheil Saakashvili may well have been the straw which broke the Russian camel’s patience if not his back.

Whether oil pipeline disputes or Russian challenges to Israel are the proximate trigger for Saakashvili’s dangerous game, it is clear that the volatile Georgian and his puppet masters may have entered a game where no one will be able to control the outcome.
